Theater or streaming?

A dark room, a big screen, strangers laughing at the same moment, or your sofa, your pause button and no one kicking your seat. The industry is fighting about this. So are you.

The case for

The theater

Big screen, big sound, no pause

  • 40 ftOf screen. Films are composed for it; your TV shows you a postcard of the painting.
  • 0Phones, pauses, 'what did he say.' Two hours of actual attention, which is rarer than it sounds.
  • TogetherA comedy with 200 people laughing is a different, better film than the same comedy alone.

Streaming

Your sofa, your time, your pause button

  • $15A month for thousands of films, roughly the price of one ticket, before popcorn.
  • PauseThe bathroom, the baby, the doorbell. Life happens; streaming lets it.
  • ChoiceMore films, from more countries and decades, than any theater has ever shown.

The verdict

It's the Theater, for any film worth arguing about.

Streaming is how everyone actually watches most things, and it's not a cheat: the catalogue is deeper, the price is lower, and some films are better met on a quiet Tuesday with the subtitles on.

But the question is where a film is best, and the answer hasn't changed: a big screen, loud sound, and a room full of people reacting is the format the medium was built for. If a film's worth two hours, it's worth the ticket. Theater.

Disagree? That's what the buttons are for.
